The Political Situation

With the oil boom came coruption. From the late 70's the traffic in Lagos became unbearable. Cars where moving at 6km/h on the busy Lagos roads. Crime was rampant.

The chaos got worse. The President at the time went away on a confeerence in 1975, a group of military officers took over power. A year later, military malcontents assassinated the leader, but the coup attempt failed. Nigeria went on a spending spree.



The Government

Nigeria has had a string of governments ever since its independence in 1960. From the time the military took over power from the democartically elected cililian governmrnt lead by Shagari, they have ruled Nigeria with the promise of handing power back to a cililian government. Bahari was the first military President who lasted 20 months. Babangida another military leader took over power.

A democratic election took place in which Abiola allegedly won the presidential post. The election was declared void and an interim government put in. Two months later general Sani Abacha took over power and promised to return the Country to Civil Rule, before he could carry out his promise he died in June 1998 unexpectedly. Abubaka Abdul Salam took over power and has promised to hand over power in May 1999.
